Adult Fiction

I couldn’t resist adding a list of some of my own favourite books, amongst all these school related and kid focused book lists.

Older Children’s and Teenage Fiction I’ve Enjoyed as an Adult

The Word Hunters series by Nick Earls (The Curious Dictionary, The Lost Hunters, The War of The Word Hunters)
A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett (all thirteen books and so much better than the movie based on the first three books)
Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Merryll of the Stones by Brian Caswell
Children of the King by Sonya Hartnett

Fiction Set In Modern Times

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
The Boy Who Fell To Earth by Kathy Lette
Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robyn Sloane (this one is kind of fantasy but is set in modern times)

Historical or Classic Fiction

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Graham Smith
Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnand
Perfume by Patrick Süskind (this is thriller bordering on horror, but in the same way that Frankenstein is horror, not Freddy Kruger type horror)
The Wild Girl by Kate Forsyth

Sci-Fi and Fantasy

Children of Men by P.D.James
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Ender’s Game and Speaker For The Dead by Orson Scott Card (and I haven’t yet read the rest to know if I can add them).
Wool and Dust by Hugh Howey
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkein
The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkein
