Studies in Australian History on Holiday, Week Two

4 October, 2013

Of course, learning never stops, despite being on holiday. We will likely finish reading The Hobbit aloud by the end of the week. We’ve been to four different parks. We’ve taken injured family members to appointments and on errands. And we snuck in an excursion too.

In conjunction with Westmead Hospital appointments, we had a trip to Parramatta Park, which had many historic buildings and monuments, like Old Government House, pictured above.

We explored the landscape that was once a farming area to support the growing colony, as the soil of Sydney Cove was too sandy. We even had some children pretending they were on Time Team and used what they have learnt on the show to draw some interesting, although not always correct, conclusions.

We also happened to come across a large colony of fruit bats, which we will return to visit in a few months, as we study bats in science before the end of the year.
