We Be Big by Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey with Don Keith
Rick and Bubba are the hosts of an amazingly successful radio program in the United States. Living in Australia, I had never heard of them until I chose this book to review for the BookSneeze blogger program.
The book chronicles how the two hosts became interested in radio and the long journey it took to get to the successful position they are in today. It begins with childhood experiments with walkie-talkies and putting on shows for the neighbourhood, sporting successes and taking the wrong path.
Despite one of the stars – Rick – going “off the rails” for a few years there is no smut in the book, nothing that wouldn’t be appropriate to let a teen read. The mistakes made at that point of Rick’s life are never glorified, in fact they really only are articulated to explain the negative consequences they were having on his life and career.
The most moving part of the story is how the duo face tragedy and glorify God in the process.
I really enjoyed the book, I do like an interesting biography, and this one fit the bill. The chapters are alternately written by the Rick and Bubba, which can get a little confusing at times, but it doesn’t seem to hinder the story at all.
If you are at all interested in biographies then this would be a good one to read.
