A Day In The Life

10 April, 2008

Inspired by Belinda Moore I’ve decided to post about a day in my life. I’ll write about a Wednesday since it’s generally the most predictable.

12:30am Wake to whingy baby. Change, feed and settle baby.
1am Wake up in wrong bed and wonder where I am. Get back into my bed and go to sleep.
4:30am Wake to cranky baby. Change, feed and settle baby. Lie awake while baby kicks and wriggles around.
5:30am Drift off to sleep as DS wakes and comes in our room. Send him back to his room or let him in our bed.
6:15am Drift off to sleep as the alarm goes off.
6:30am Get out of bed. Make DH’s lunch. Cook breakfast. Clear out clean, dry dishes. Wash some more dishes.
6:45am Breakfast. DH reads devotions book. Practice memory verse.
7:15am Pray with DH as a family and say goodbye for the day.
7:20am Start a load of washing. Take mental inventory of what needs to be done today and get motivated.
7:25am Motivation derailed as I realise I need to change, feed and settle baby.
7:45am Tidy up from breakfast. Check email. Wash dishes.

8am Shower then get back in pjs as baby is asleep in my room and I didn’t think forward enough to get them out earlier.
8:15am Attempt to get kids dressed. Pack bags for the day.
8:30am Get back to tidying kitchen. Put washing in the dryer and start another load of washing. Make lunches and/or morning tea. Tidy kitchen. Baby wakes, get dressed, feed, dress, change baby.
9am Check Sydney Morning Herald site and some blogs if there is time. Try to finish cleaning kitchen. Clean bathroom.
9:15am Get kids’ shoes on and hats on and make sure we’ve packed everything.
9:25am Realise I haven’t sent the kids to the toilet and send them there.
9:29am Change DS’s pants that have gotten wet on the wet bathroom floor.
9:35am Leave for playgroup. Check mail on the way.
10am Playgroup. Watch kids, feed, change, settle baby, supervise and help with activities, catch up with adults in four-minute conversations made up of eight, thirty-second grabs between our respective children interrupting us. Attempt to have a cuppa and eat something. Pack up. Take kids to toilet. Collect various items of craft and artwork. Work out where said artwork will fit in the car without getting glue and/or paint over everything. Work out who we can palm said artwork off to.
12:30pm Eat lunch, most likely in the car.
12:45pm Change baby. Go to library.
1pm Spend time at the library. Watch kids, browse children’s books. Attempt to browse adult books and be interrupted by urgent toilet run. Feed, change and settle baby. Read books to kids.
1:45pm Head to library counter. Unload books to be borrowed. Kids disturb leaflets on frustratingly low table. Find library cards, pay overdue fine. Fix leaflets. Leave library and get halfway to the car. Dash back for urgent toilet run. Get back to car and head home.
2:15pm Rest time. Feed and change baby. Attempt to clean up. Watch kids and keep them away from each other and try to get them to do something quiet. Write blog posts or articles with baby hanging over one arm. Put washing in the dryer or hang it out. Put another load of washing in the machine. Make beds. Wash some more dishes.
3pm Playschool! Attempt to tidy loungeroom one-handed. Think about starting dinner. Change baby.
3:30pm Convince kids to turn TV off. Play Wii with the kids while baby plays.
3:35pm Pick up baby and attempt to help kids play Wii with one hand. Think about starting dinner.
4pm Attempt to settle cranky baby. Sit on computer, tired, with cranky baby. Check forums and browse aimlessly. Attempt to tidy disaster zone in loungeroom.
4:30pm Start dinner, with cranky baby in one arm or screaming baby in rocker because I need two hands. Wash dishes. Attempt to settle baby. Attempt to tidy disaster zone in loungeroom.
5pm Kids eat dinner. Start cleaning kitchen.

5:05pm Attempt to settle cranky baby

5:15pm Leave whingy baby for a moment to come and clean the mess the kids have made in the kitchen while I attempted to settle baby.
5:20pm Attempt to settle baby.
5:30pm Kids brush teeth (with my one-armed assistance), go to the toilet and get into pjs. Change baby, who is now completely overtired but quiet.
5:45pm Read bible story book, a chapter of current chapter book. Read picture books if running ahead of time. Lights out. Tell more stories and pray with kids. Put their nappies on.
6pm Attempt to put baby to sleep.
6:05pm Go back into the kids who are talking.
6:07pm Go back to baby. One child decides they need to go to the toilet again.
6:10pm Put nappy back on said child. Go back to baby.
6:12pm Other child decides they need to go to the toilet and them calling out “toilet!” disturbs almost asleep baby.
6:15pm Finally get baby to sleep. Get second child out of bathroom and back into bed.
6:18pm Go back to settle baby who is whinging. They go back to sleep.
6:20pm DH arrives home to a peaceful house, oblivious of the chaos only moments beforehand.
6:25pm One child decides they need to go to the toilet again. Get cranky.
6:30pm Put nappy back on said child.
6:35pm Dish up DH and my dinner.
6:40pm Sit down to watch the last 20mins of “The Cook and The Chef” (one of the two shows I regularly watch).
7pm Think about tidying the kitchen. Watch ABC news or browse online.
7:30pm Potter around tidying up little bits here and there.
8pm Try to spend a few minutes catching up with DH. Tidy kitchen after dinner. Head down to the car to finish unloading the things from the day.
8:30pm Watch Spicks and Specks (the other weekly show we watch). Fold the last four days’ washing while I watch.
9pm Head to bed because we’ve stayed up too late the previous two nights. Brush teeth, go to toilet, put pjs on. Realise a wet load of washing has been in the washing machine all afternoon. Put it in dryer. Check on kids, get into bed.
9:15pm Do devotions book with DH. Chat, pray together then lights out. Lie awake remembering things I should’ve done today or things I need to do tomorrow.
9:45pm Drift off to sleep as baby wakes. Change, feed and settle baby.
10pm Get back into my bed and attempt to go to sleep.
10:25pm Drift off to sleep as DS wakes. DH settles him.
10:30pm Finally fall asleep.

I hope you enjoyed learning what happens in a day in my life!
